The home-town event of the season, the 2019 Douglas County Fair & Rodeo, gears up next week. One must-see item on the schedule each year is the Junior Livestock Sale, where local 4-H participants sell their beef, swine, sheep, poultry, goats and rabbits to the highest bidders.
This year the Junior Livestock Sale celebrates 60 years of investment in the youth of the community and the future of agriculture. During the first sale, held in September 1959, the top steer sold for approximately $500. Last year the champion steer sold for more than $20,000!

The 4-H program that culminates in the Livestock Sale teaches youth valuable leadership skills and each bid directly supports the exhibitors selling their livestock and helps invest in the future of agriculture through funding scholarships. The 2018 Junior Livestock Sale generated a total of $461,108 thanks to the generous buyers who participated.
The Douglas County Fair & Rodeo kicks off with a parade through historic downtown Castle Rock on Saturday, July 27 and runs through Sunday, August 4 with plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Tickets will be available for purchase at the ticket office at 500 Fairgrounds Drive, Castle Rock, during open hours or may be purchased online in advance.
