Just try. That’s the motto local kids are keeping in mind as they pull on their swimsuits, dust off their bikes and lace up their sneakers. It’s time for the Town’s annual Tri the Rock youth triathlon.
This year’s event is Sunday, May 20, at Butterfield Crossing Park and Pool, 3952 W. Butterfield Crossing Drive.
Young athletes ages 5 to 14 are invited to “tri” the course. The race distances are:
· 5 to 6 year olds: 25-meter swim (one pool length), 1-kilometer bike ride (one lap around Butterfield Park) and a 500-meter run
· 7 to 8 and 9 to 10 year olds: 50-meter swim (two pool lengths, down and back), 4-kilometer bike ride and a 1-kilometer run
· 11 to 12 and 13 to 14 year olds: 100-meter swim (four pool lengths, down and back twice), 8-kilometer bike ride and a 2-kilometer run
Event fees are $45 through Friday, May 4 and $50 through Friday, May 18. Please keep in mind, the registration deadline is May 18. A portion of each entry fee will be donated to the participant’s school physical education program. Plus, the winning school will get to display the traveling Tri the Rock Trophy for an entire year.
The registration fee includes a T-shirt, goody bag and lunch. Please remember participants compete based on their age as of race day.
Bike racks open at 6:30 a.m. The race begins at 8 a.m. However, check-in for the 5 to 6 year old age group does not begin until 10:30 a.m., since the group doesn’t start until the other races have finished. Pre-race check-in is available from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Castle Rock Recreation Center, 2301 Woodlands Blvd.
